In SOUTH PASADENA, land was clearly managed by individual homeowners. I worked with home owners to fit poppies into their existing landscaping preferences.
Growing challenges involved sprinklers, lawnmowers, professional gardeners, dense soil, and tree cover.
Generally, it was not difficult to get permission from homeowners after I explained the project was an 'artwork.' In a couple instances, homeowners who hired professional gardeners seemed to believe their gardeners did very little, and would not disturb, or even notice any poppies. That showed a gulf between homeowners and hired gardeners-- gardeners pretty vigilantly weeded out the poppies until specifically asked to leave them in place.
